Why invest in innovation?
Market adaptability
Innovation forces you to be customer and industry obsessed. It requires you to stay in tune with your broader ecosystem. Through customer research and experimentation, you can learn more about your product and market fit. Innovation allows you to discover new customer pain points and diversify your areas of expertise.
Build competitive advantage
Innovation builds competitive advantage, which in turn drives growth. Remain the industry leader your competitors are following without giving them a chance to catch up to your lead. Create more value for your ideal customers.
Be proactive, not reactive
Innovation helps you be proactive in the marketplace instead of reactive. Road map changes or big shifts in organizational priorities can be extremely time-consuming and expensive. Instead of having to drastically shift your team’s priorities when customers’ expectations start to shift, investment in innovation helps you anticipate future customer needs and market trends.

Current areas of focus

Cognitive accessibility
We’re collaborating with practitioners, thought leaders, and non-profits to improve digital experiences for people with cognitive accessibility needs. We’re helping to define standards and methodologies to ensure representation from this community throughout the product development cycle.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI is transforming every aspect of life and work. If not carefully designed with inclusivity in mind, AI has the potential to deepen the digital divide. We’re building inclusive datasets—so that AI tools can be tested, from the outset, for bias and designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Scaling our Community
In addition to the existing representation of communities with visual and motor impairments, we’re expanding into communities with hearing impairments and cognitive disabilities. We’ll continue creating opportunities for our testers to contribute valuable accessibility insights, while also helping them build new skills to enter the tech workforce.
Innovative ways to measure accessibility
Measuring accessibility is hard. We’ve created new ways to measure accessibility that are easier to action and report on over time.
Accessible Usability Scale (AUS)
The AUS was developed to answer the question “how do we measure usability for people with disabilities?” Fable’s AUS survey calculates a score out of 100 where a higher number represents a better experience. We’re continuing to evaluate and evolve the AUS to measure the experiences of people who are hard of hearing and have cognitive disabilities.
Compatibility Tests (CTs)
Compatibility Tests (CTs) approach metrics very differently. They evaluate the compatibility of five different assistive technologies with a specific task flow. The number of users that were successful in completing the task is averaged to give a task completion score. CTs are an easy way for organizations to benchmark the accessibility of their products and prioritize issues based on user needs.
What we’re thinking about
Our experts are moving the needle when it comes to measuring accessibility, AI, and inclusive design.
