Community spotlight: Carrie Morales

Learn about her efforts to make technology more accessible and user-friendly.

Carrie Morales is a remarkable individual with a passion for accessibility and a crucial member of the Fable community. Beyond her role as an accessibility tester, Carrie is a content creator, a homeschooling mom, and a tech enthusiast. Her story showcases the impact that accessibility testing has not only on her life, but also on the millions of individuals who benefit from her work.

Navigating digital landscapes

Carrie relies on various assistive technologies, including screen magnification, font adjustments and colour inversion. These tools empower her to navigate digital landscapes, but they come with unique challenges. Imagine looking at a piece of paper through a paper towel tube – that’s the limited view of a screen that screen magnification provides.

When using assistive technologies, Carrie encounters challenges like obscure button placement, difficulty navigating tables, poor contrast affecting readability, invisible borders on websites, and frustration with inaccessible content. The digital interactions that are most seamless and enjoyable to her must include accessible elements like clear borders, readable text, good contrast and intuitive page layouts. “Dark mode makes a huge, huge impact. It’s always gratifying to me when I see a company really change and implement a dark mode,” she emphasizes.

Joining the Fable community

During a challenging time in Carrie’s life, a friend of Carrie’s told her about an exciting opportunity to work at Fable. The interview and signup process, she recalls, were remarkably smooth. “The interview and signup process were easy, and everybody I spoke to through email or on the phone was very friendly,” she notes. Just weeks after that initial interview she became an accessibility tester, contributing expertise from her lived experience. Her mission is not just about personal preferences but about making technology universally accessible and user-friendly.

To Carrie, being a part of Fable is more than a job; it’s being a part of a community that energizes her. Sitting down with customers over Zoom to explain her assistive technology and the impact of accessibility problems provides her with fulfillment. “It starts with this small community, but what we do impacts thousands, millions of people out there,” she passionately shares. The sense of purpose within the Fable community is what makes her work truly life changing.

Creative work outside of Fable

Accessibility testing with Fable is just one of many facets of Carrie’s life. As a content creator, she shares her insights on accessibility across various social media platforms. Her content includes commentary on assistive technology tools, unique accessibility features, and technology news. She also interviews staff from companies making a difference in the accessibility space. Carrie also hosts a Discord community where people who are blind or visually impaired can connect and support one another. You can learn more on her website at CarrieOnAccessibility.com. And yes, the pun is intended. Carrie is also a homeschooling mom, nature lover, and someone who finds joy in singing and reading books.

The importance of accessible technology
